Andrés J. García, Regents' Professor in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, has received the 2025 Biomaterials Global Impact Award from Elsevier's Biomaterials.
Elsevier is a global leader in information and analytics, helping researchers and healthcare professionals advance science and improve health outcomes. Biomaterials is an international journal covering the science and clinical application of biomaterials and is the flagship title in Elsevier's biomaterials science portfolio.
The Biomaterials Global Impact Award recognizes distinguished research and development accomplishments in biomaterials. García is being recognized for his research program, which integrates innovative engineering, materials science, and cell biology concepts and technologies to create cell-instructive biomaterials for regenerative medicine and is generating new knowledge in mechanobiology.
"This award absolutely reflects my outstanding trainees and awesome collaborators," said García. "I also must thank the best school and college for the continued support."
García serves as executive director of the Parker H. Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience, one of Georgia Tech's 11 interdisciplinary research institutes within the Georgia Tech research enterprise. Since he began as an assistant professor at Georgia Tech in 1998, his research has generated intellectual property and licensing agreements with start-up and multi-national companies. He has also co-founded three start-up companies.
Along with many other career distinctions, García has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Medicine and named a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, the highest professional distinctions in those fields.
"It is another amazing and well-deserved achievement from Andrés," said Devesh Ranjan, Eugene C. Gwaltney, Jr. School Chair and professor. "We are fortunate to have him as part of the Woodruff School."
García will be presented with the award this spring at the 2025 Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS) European Conference, which will take place May 20-23 in Freiburg, Germany.
