Lula Baker has been named the inaugural school administrative officer (chief of staff) in the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering, effective December 1.

The chief of staff will oversee the organization, administration, human resources, and management of strategic activities, supporting the chair in directing School operations and initiatives. This position will act as the primary contact for legal matters, audits, and investigations, and provide expertise on Institute policies, faculty governance, and research compliance.

“I am excited to have Lula by my side once again, offering her invaluable guidance as we work together to shape the future of the Woodruff School,” said Devesh Ranjan, Eugene C. Gwaltney Jr. School Chair and professor. “Her expertise will help us navigate policy and development matters, anticipate emerging needs, identify key trends, and lead special projects that align with our vision for growth and Inclusive Excellence.”

Baker has more than 20 years of experience as a human resources leader. She joined the Scheller College of Business earlier this year as director of human resources II, after spending three years as director of human resources in the Woodruff School.

During her time here, she consulted with leadership, staff, and faculty on comprehensive and strategic human resources matters such as employee relations, talent acquisition, compensation, immigration, organizational development, and leave administration.

“Lula’s unwavering commitment and leadership led to much success and growth during her time as director of human resources at the Woodruff School,” said Ranjan. “She was instrumental in moving the needle on equity in the School, and Lula and her team have hired more than 20 faculty and staff and secured 19 promotions for staff members, the largest in Woodruff School history, during my time as chair.”

In addition, Baker was a founding member of the Staff Happiness and Organizational Effectiveness (S.H.O.E.) Cabinet. Alongside Melody Foster, Ann Lamb, and Shannon Yee, she helped create an inclusive environment where staff members feel valued and are enabled to reach their potential.

Baker has also worked at Emory University as a human resources manager, Coca-Cola as an employee relations manager, and served as the human resources manager supporting the President, Provost, and the Office of the Executive Vice President for Research (EVPR) for Georgia Tech.
