Faculty and Staff Recognized with Woodruff School Awards

Faculty and staff of the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering have been recognized for their contributions to the environment and success of the Woodruff School for the 2022-23 academic year. They were honored at the Faculty and Staff Honors and Awards Reception on April 12, 2023.

Members of the Woodruff School community nominated faculty and staff members who they think help advance the careers of others within the School and foster a positive culture of inclusion where individuals feel valued. Honorees received awards across five categories including "Mentor of the Year Award," "Culture Champion Award (Faculty)," "Culture Champion Award (Staff)," "Staff of the Year Award," and "Research Award."
 

Mentor of the Year Award  

This award is presented to faculty who have excelled in the mentorship of faculty, staff, or students. The award recognizes the time and effort that the nominee spends in mentoring and serving in the Woodruff School community. Mentor of the Year Award winners are Associate Professor Costas Arvanitis; Director of Design & Innovation Amit Jariwala; and Senior Academic Professional and Undergraduate Academic Advisor Kristi Mehaffey.

Culture Champion Award (Faculty) 

This award is presented to faculty who have made a positive impact on the culture of the staff in the Woodruff School. Someone who makes a difference, advocates for a positive and productive culture, and works to support and/or develop successful cultural practices that support the Woodruff School’s strategic educational and research goals. The Culture Champion Award winner for faculty is Carl Ring Family Chair and Professor Alper Erturk.

Culture Champion Award (Staff) 

This award is presented to staff who go above and beyond to facilitate, enable, and support the teaching and research initiatives of faculty and their research groups. This award recognizes staff members who strive to make a difference and works to support and/or develop successful cultural practices that support the Woodruff School’s strategic educational and research goals. Culture Champion Award winners for staff are Lab and Facilities Coordinator Jacob Blevins; and Academic Assistant II Mack Curtis.

Transition

Staff of the Year Award 

This award is presented to staff who have made the most significant impact on the success and operations of the Woodruff School. This award recognizes the excellent performance by staff in support of the Woodruff School’s strategic educational and research goals. Staff of the Year Award winners are Academic Advisor II Lenna Applebee; and IT Support Professional II Veronica Leak. In addition, Assistant Director of Financial Operations Julia Thomas received honorary mention.

Research Award

This award is presented to faculty who have made a significant contribution to their field and to the reputation of the Woodruff School through innovations in research that support the Woodruff School’s strategic educational and research goals. Research Award winners are Associate Professor Aaron Stebner; Assistant Professor Ye Zhao; and Woodruff Professor Ting Zhu.
