Three members of the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering were recognized during the College of Engineering’s Staff Appreciation and Wellness Day on August 7.
Shamekia Cotton, assistant to the chair II, received the Soaring Jacket Award; Tiffany Johnson, faculty support coordinator, received the Service Award; and Monifa Skelton-Wells, assistant director of admin operations, received the Excellence in Leadership Award.
The Soaring Jacket Award is presented to one staff member in each School who demonstrates accountability, critical thinking, initiative, and a commitment to excellence. Cotton received the award for providing exceptional support to faculty, leadership, and colleagues while managing complex responsibilities with accuracy and efficiency.
Skelton-Wells, who nominated Cotton for the award, said she consistently demonstrates professionalism, dedication, and a strong commitment to supporting the Woodruff School.
“During a critical leadership transition, she stepped in to provide interim support to the school chair while continuing to excel in her regular role,” Skelton-Wells said. “Her positive attitude, teamwork, and willingness to go above and beyond make her highly deserving of the Soaring Jacket Award.”
Johnson earned the Service Award for demonstrating exceptional service, leadership, and a strong commitment to supporting the Woodruff School. The award recognizes employees whose selfless efforts foster collaboration, drive positive change, and inspire others to contribute to the common good.
Skelton-Wells, who also nominated Johnson, said she goes above and beyond by leading monthly professional development and team-building initiatives for the administrative support team, serving as a mentor to colleagues, and pursuing continuous learning and professional growth.
“Her positive attitude, commitment to continuous improvement, and lasting impact on the administrative team make her highly deserving of the Service Award,” Skelton-Wells said.
The Excellence in Leadership Award recognizes staff members who consistently exhibit strong leadership, inspire their teams, and drive positive change. Skelton-Wells received the award for improving administrative team operations while fostering a culture of continuous growth and development.
In her nomination letter, Ann Lamb, administrative supervisor, described Skelton-Wells as a leader who approaches challenges with calm and consistency.
“She focuses on solutions, maintains perspective, and ensures progress continues without creating unnecessary stress or disruption,” Lamb wrote. “That consistency has been especially important in maintaining both morale and productivity.”
Held annually, the College of Engineering's Staff Appreciation and Wellness Day celebrates the contributions of College staff members and recognizes their service and impact.
