Emily Muhlberger

Emily MuhlbergerWhat is your connection to Georgia Tech?

I earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering Co-op in 2004 and did not get enough of Georgia Tech, so returned for an MBA from Scheller College of Business in 2009. From 2017-2021 I served on the Georgia Tech Women Alumnae Network Board and as President from 2020 to 2021. I have been on the ME External Advisory Board since 2014 and taught two semesters of Project Management to Scheller Evening MBAs.

What is your current professional role? Please list a few notable career accomplishments.

I am a Senior Consultant at Slalom in Experience Strategy and Design.  If you ever want to talk about having multiple careers in a lifetime, please reach out:

  • My STEM career started in middle school with science fair projects in botany and I was awarded two first-place awards in the State of Georgia Science Fair. I took over my mom’s garden so I could study the impact of mulches on lettuce (compost is best!).
  • In 2017 I joined the Georgia Tech College of Engineering Council of Outstanding Young Engineering Alumni.
  • I am most proud that I’ve expanded my career by “yes, and…” I started as an engineer and wanted to learn business, so I combined areas to move into process improvement.  I learned design thinking and transitioned from fixing problems behind the scenes to improving user’s/customer’s/client’s experiences.

Why are you passionate about WoW?

Looking back at my career, when I needed it, a Georgia Tech alumna was there to lend a hand.  Anything from meeting for a coffee to “walking” my resume to the hiring manager, their support is, and was, incredible. Georgia Tech-associated women are incredible in their unique way and providing support is easy and fun!

What are your hobbies and passions?

I can usually be found planning a trip to a plein air watercolor class, walking my two fur babies Penny and Flora, enhancing my garden, or building things that do not fit in my suitcase to bring home. One of my favorite projects was making RHS Wisley rose trellises that look like crowns.

What is your favorite quote?

“You're braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” -Christopher Robin; -A.A. Milne

What advice would you give a young female engineer?

You are courageous and you CAN do anything. Ask yourself, “down the road, will I regret not doing it?” If there is any bit of question that you might regret not trying, you have to double down and do it!
