Professional Summary

Julia Thomas is the Assistant Director of Financial Operations in the Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering. In this role, Julia manages finance office operations and leads pre-and post-award activities. Julia comes to the Woodruff School from the Georgia Tech School of Chemistry & Biochemistry. She joined the School of Chemistry & Biochemistry in 2011 as an Analyst and became the Assistant Director for Finance Operations in 2018. During her time there, she led both pre-and post-award activities as well as strategic initiatives in the areas of development, foundations, and organizational operations. She and her team built a proactive approach to portfolio management which provides accurate predictive information tailored to individual PI’s current and anticipated spending.

Julia’s 24-year journey at Georgia Tech started at the Georgia Center for Advanced Telecommunication Technology (GCATT) as an entry-level Accountant and includes roles in Aerospace Engineering, Georgia Tech Police Department (GTPD) as well as Chemistry & Biochemistry. Julia obtained her MBA from the Evening Program at the Scheller College of Business while working full-time at GTPD as an Administrative Manager. She graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Management from Georgia Tech and was honored as one of the first four-year Hope Scholars in the state of Georgia.
